This high quality medical illustration includes two medical illustrations demonstrating a commonly misunderstood traumatic injury of the lumbar spine.  The main image demonstrates the spinal cord and peripheral nerves of the body. The inset image demonstrates the two types of lumbar spondylolistheses – a traumatic condition where spinal ligament damage (and in some cases spinal fracture) results in anterior (forward) slippage of a vertebra -  called “anterolisthesis”, or posterior (backward) slippage of a vertebra – called retrolisthesis. (In the event a vertebra slides forward or back 3.5mm on the vertebra below, should result in a surgical consultation and qualifies as a permanent impairment under the American Medical Association Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment.)

This graphic is best used for demand letters/narrative reports, mediation, arbitration or trial in cases involving a spondylolisthesis (anterolisthesis or retrolisthesis) of a lumbar vertebra after trauma.
